Tread Lightly: an invitation, 2023

Cammeraygal Country

Collaboration with artist Emma Hicks and Emily Lienert

Journey through Countries, over song lines, across multiple generations.

Where did you travel from and where will you go?’

At this moment, the mural invites you into Cammeraygal Country. We invite you to channel the freedom and the brush turkeys’ natural connection to Country to inspire your travel. We beckon a desire to journey through the local area, footsteps down to Berry Island and Gadyan Track. Amidst the landscape and native flora, this mural embodies a tribute to Country, truth and the power of storytelling.

Whether on train or by foot, we ask you to look at this mural and take notice. Look at the blooming flowers, listen to the natural sounds of the brush turkeys, feel the warm sun on your skin. At this moment, wander down to Berry Island and immerse yourself in this nature.

This artwork was commissioned and installed as part of Transport NSW’s Transport Access Program. We spent a day onsite with Aunty Jeanie Moran and Aunty Clair Jackson in consultation. During our day onsite we discussed celebrating female Blak excellence, “they should be recognised, remembered and celebrated,” and this mural aims to do that.

Peach tones are used to represent the sunrise and sunset, drawing it back to the best times for fishing: dusk and dawn. The view of the water and oysters further represent fishing in the area.

The mural design is intended as invitation to wander on Country, further indicated by the tracks. The strong fishing and water motifs are indicative of Cammeraygal mob’s strong connection to this. It is a representation of the water AND the land.

To the right is a representation of the water at Berry Island. The blue line traces the water edge, beginning at Greenwich Point on the left. The black line then depicts the walk from Wollstonecraft Train Station to Berry Island.
