Painted on Dharawal Country in Kurranulla

Located at the Cronulla Ferry Wharf

Medium: Aerosol.

This mural was the first of 3 designs I did at the Walk the Walls Festival 2022. I grew up on Dharawal Country in Kurranulla (or Cronulla) and feel a deep connection to these lands and waters.

The design and concept were a collaboration with Aunty Deanna, representing waterways and connections.

Middens in the local area are filled with the shellfish and oysters collected from these waterways. This was the main source of food for the Dharawal people of this area for thousands and thousands of years. This mural depicts the shellfish and oysters as well as the important role they play in cleansing the waters.

The starry night sky can be seen on the inside of the wharves roof, where passengers wait for their ferries. As this wharf is a place of transit, the night sky represents travelling and navigating by the stars.

At the first Walk the Walls 3 years ago, I started dating one of my close friends. We now live in the Mountains together and he is a huge support and inspiration for me. I felt so lucky to be able to design and paint this mural with him. He pushes and challenges me with my designs and techniques with aerosol.

The birds were painted from pictures I had taken myself.

This is a mural by my nephew, Michael.

My nephew is 10 years old, a young Aboriginal Thai man who is incredible at art. This is his first mural. We collaborated on this design and painting together. It is of our beautiful dog Duke.

I'm so proud of him. He completely impressed me in how well he sketched this up on the iPad then onto the wall with chalk. Picking up the can, he got the hang of it straight away with some clean lines and fades. Seeing all the other artists around, he came up with his artist name MACHEZ, inspired by mac and cheese.
