Wambuul

Painted on Wiradjuri Country

A mural of Wambuul (Macquarie River) painted for the department of land services for the launch of their new bush-food educational gardens.

Medium:  Aerosol and acrylic on brick. 4m height x 11m length

Wambuul is the life blood of Dubbo and the Wiradjuri people, its banks are home to many food and medicine plants. I painted this mural to show the significance of Wambuul to our people. This was the first time I have painted on my own country, and it was an amazing experience. I painted some of the important local flora including Swamp foxtail, Westringia, Native apricot and Quandong. Many of these bush foods I featured were also planted in the gardens that welcome you in.

The white cockatoos in this mural represent our ancestors coming to watch over us and the river. Every morning when I arrived, I was welcomed by a pair of cockatoos feeding in the local acacia trees… I wondered if they were watching over me too?
